Extending for about 1,800 miles (2,900 km) north-south, it has a maximum depth of 34,587 feet (10,542 metres) and covers a total area of 102,000 square miles (264,000 square km).
The steep slopes of the trench are characterized in places by an intermediate bench,or series of steps or terraces, which are sometimes interpreted as the scarps of giant, gravitationally slumped sheets of rock.
3. Puerto Rico Trench
Thrid Most Deepest Point in the ocean is The Puerto Rico Trench. It is an oceanic trench located on the boundary between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the third deepest trench in the world with water depths exceeding 8,400 meters.
The Puerto Rico Trench, in contrast, is located at a boundary between two plates that slide past each other with only a small component of subduction. The trench is less deep where the component of subduction is larger.
4. Sunda Trench
The Sunda Trench was formerly known as Java Trench. It is located in the north east of the Indian Ocean with the length 2600 kms with the maximum depth of 8,152 meters.
There is scientific evidence that the recent earthquake activity in the area of the Sunda Trench could lead to further catastrophic shifting within a relatively short period of time, perhaps less than a decade. This threat has resulted in international agreements to establish a tsunami warning system in place along the Indian Ocean coast.
5. Eurasia Basin
The Eurasian Basin, is one of the two major basins into which the North Polar Basin of the Arctic Ocean.
It is the most deepest point in the Arctic Ocean which is 5,450 meters deep.
