Darjeeling

It is a beautiful adventurous hill station situated in West Bengal state of India. Darjeeling is an internationally renowned as a tourist destination, along with its tea industry and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, it is hill town headquarters of Darjeeling district with a partially autonomous status within the state of West Bengal. The town is located in the Mahabharat Range or Lesser Himalaya at an average elevation of 6,710.

Best time to visit Darjeeling is after monsoon during the month of October and November and during Spring when skies are dry, panoramas are clear and temperatures are pleasant.

Activities

Mountain  Visit

Like other hill stations, Himalayan views are a big attraction in Darjeeling. Skyline is dominated by Kanchenjunga, India’s highest peak and the world’s third highest Mountain. Views from its Chowrasta,  around the north side of Observatory Hill, are stunning  in clear weather.

Toy Train

The Darjeeling Himalayan railway known affectionately as the Troy Train. The joy rides coasts 300 INR during the high stream that leaves Darjeeling at 10am to 12pm for two hours stream powered return trip to Ghoom. It’s wise to book at least a day ahead at the train station.

Tiger Hill

It is located 11km away from Darjeeling in south, above Ghoom. The sunrise over the Himalayan from here is truly spectacular and has become a major tourist attraction, with convoys of jeep leaving Darjeeling fir Tiger Hill every morning during the high season . You have to pay Rs5 to stand in the pavilion ground.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is one of the India”s best zoo and animals are cared by dedicated keepers. Housed within the rocky and forested environment is India’s only collection of Siberian tigers, as well as Himalayan black bears, red pandas, snow leopards and Tibetan wolves. The zoo is a pleasant 30 min walk down from Chowrasta along Jawahar road.

White Water Rafting

White Water Rafting is organized in Teesta River and Rangeet river. Rafting trips leaves Teesta bazaar along the road to Kalimpong. The best time for rafting is September to November and March to June.  It is done with minimum four people.

Getting There & Away

AIR

The nearest airport is 90km away at Bagdogra, about 12km from Siliguri.

BUS

From Chowk bazaar bus station. regular bus departure from Mirik and Siliguri. tickets can be brought from the old super market.

Getting Around

Use jeeps to go anywhere in north of the city center. leave from the northern end of the Chowk bazaar station. there are several taxi stands around town. Poter can be hired to carry bags.
