Its unbelievable how this island state presents and endless variety within such a compact space! From green rain forested valleys to glistening white beaches, towering sea cliffs, highland lakes and cities all within a 90-minute drive. Show me another place in the world like this and I will do your laundry for two whole weeks!

This was my first visit to Tassie and I was blown away by the combinations of the heritage charm and the cultural diversity in the capital city of Hobart. You drive or join a tour, just 90 minutes away you would be welcomed by the pristine waters of Bruny Island and the mesmerizing history of Port Arthur – so much to learn. It’s a wonder how tranquillity of a city from a era long gone co exists with the vitality of a small sized metropolis.

Dock side cafés, 19th century sandstone warehouses, lofty porches, quaint settler’s cottages, and artist’s studios, fine dining restaurants- The pretty River Derwent and the Mount Wellington rising above it is a picture perfect landscape. Next day my mate Callum took me to a tour through the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the MONA just a few minutes away. In the evening he took me to a classical music concert. He promised to take me to the dock early the next morning – it was an amazing sight – fishing was fun! I’m not much of a fisho myself but it was great to be a part of it all. The fish punts, fishing boats, Constitution Dock, square rigged yachts and more. Later we took a tour of the Salamanca Market – luckily it was a Saturday- the only day it’s held.

If you go past the Coal River Valley Wineries in the historic town of Richmond is an overload of landscapes and pretty sights and wonderful experiences. The gaol serves as a prologue to the Port Arthur Historic Sight on the Tasman Peninsula. If you are looking for thrilling walks – you are in the right place. It will lead you to 300 meter sea cliffs- to feed that adrenalin junkie inside of you.

Bruny Island trip was suggested by Callum’s wife, Audra. It was a great suggestion- the view from beneath the world’s highest sea cliffs is surreal. Oatlands is another wonder on its own. We also further to New Norfolk and spent two nights in Hamilton. The southern edge of the Central Plateau will give you the taste of a high country- Bothwell especially. One good thing about making Hobart your base is that you have a chance to kick back and relax once in a while from the trips to the wider regions for its colors, variety, and visual delight.

flightsaustralia.com.au is what helped me get pretty great deals on the tickets- you can give it a shot too. Overall it was a fantastic weekend break. Would have to go back soon – it was too short a trip and once is not enough.

So, have you seen all the three parts from the movie – Lord of the Rings. How about to travel to the fascinating place from the Movie – Lord of the Rings. Do you have any Idea where the movie Lord of the Rings was filmed?

Well, It was filmed on the beautiful landscapes of  New Zealand. It was 20 years ago, and 18­ year­ old Tolkien fan Peter Jackson was travelling from Wellington to Auckland. Middle Earth was there, outside the window of the train. ince then, New Zealand‘s passenger rail service has tragically withered, but Jackson‘s journey has been magically realised.

After three years of planning, the director began his cinematic journey to film Lord of the Rings in October 1999 with around 2500 companions. Those most beautiful places of New Zealand from the movie are here -

1. Arrowtown Recreational Reserve

Arrowtown Recreational Reserve is located in Arrowtown in  Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. In the movie this place was filmed as Ford of Bruinen.

The Ford of Bruinen was the crossing of the Bruinen or Loudwater River on the path to Rivendell. Also known as the Ford of Rivendell, its waters were under the power of Elrond.

Arrowtown is located on the banks of the Arrow River approximately 5 km from State Highway 6.

There is also road access directly to Queenstown via the Shotover Gorge and a third route via the picturesque Lake Hayes.

2. Tarras

Tarras is located in Wanaka of Otago region of New Zealand. It was used same for Ford of Bruinen.

3.  Fernside,

Fwernside is located in Featherston of the Wairarapa region.

Fernside is an historic Georgian-style house offering accommodation in its grounds. If you stay here, you can see where scenes of Lothlorien were filmed. The small lake became the Silverlode River which flows near the city of the Elves.

Heathcote Helmore who designed the house in 1924 had worked in Lutyen’s office.

The magnificent grounds are not open to casual visitors but can also be visited with any of three different tour companies, listed on the Fernside website.

4. Paradise, Glenorchy, Otago – for Amon Hen

Glenorchy is one of the most popular tourist spot in NewZealand. In the movie it was filmed for Amon Hen and Lothlorien.

It offers many tramping tracks. It lies near the borders of Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park. The highly popular Routeburn Track can be accessed by passing through Glenorchy.

5. Hinuera Valley, Matamata – Hobbiton, New Zealand

Hobbinton was the main attraction of the movie. The Hinuera Valley is located in Matamata in Waikato region, New Zealand.

You can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set  from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy in a fascinating two-hour guided tour.

The set has been completely rebuilt and will remain as it was seen in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm.

You can relax and soak up the unique atmosphere with a great cup of coffee or a light meal in The Shires Rest Cafe, which is also available for functions, conferences or other occasions.

Abel Tasman National Park is a national park located in South Island of New Zealand. The park was founded in 1942. With a coverage of only 225.3 square kilometres, is the smallest of New Zealand’s national parks. The park consists of forested, hilly country to the north of the valleys of the Takaka and Riwaka Rivers, and is bounded to the north by the waters of Golden Bayand Tasman Bay. It is named after Abel Tasman, who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand.

Shark Island  is located at the mouth of Rose Bay on Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). Over the last 120 years up until 1975, Shark Island was used as an animal quarantine area, public recreation reserve and naval storage depot. Shark Island is said to have resembled a shark and the shallow waters around it presented a constant danger to shipping, especially with the growth of trade in the early 19th century.

Shark Island offers a picnic experience that’s a little bit different! The island received its name because of its shape and not its wildlife. One kilometre off Rose Bay, the 1.5 Hectare island has spectacular views down the harbour to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

The island presents a danger for shipping due to the shallow waters surrounding it.

Shark Island has a gazebo, large grassed area and a wading beach. A ferry service runs four trips a day out of  Circular Quay on Saturdays and Sundays. Reservations are essential as the island can only cater for up to 500 people at any one time. The island can also be booked for private functions.

Boston, Massachusetts:  The infamous Charles Street Jail was originally a model prison in the 1800s that fell into disrepair in the mid-1900s.

Prone to riots and subject to physical decay, it was officially condemned to closer decades before it finally shut its doors (as a prison) in the 1990s. Now, however, it has reopened its doors as an amazingly luxurious four-star jail hotel that has former inmates shocked, impressed and perhaps a bit jealous.

Mt. Gambier, Australia : The Mount Gambier Jail experience is anything but luxurious. In fact, this place markets its rooms as budget accommodations for cheapskates and backpackers.

Very little has been done to renovate the rooms here which are heavy, rusted and bolted just like they were when the jail was originally in use – the entire experience is rather Spartan.

Still, the hotel has some local flavor and features some interesting odds and ends and regularly-scheduled events from a monthly jam sessions to a local produce market.
