Separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait, Tasmania has managed to fascinate one and all- each time. Its relatively unspoiled natural environment has earned it the names like – Island of Inspiration- and I understood why so the moment I landed. Getting to Tasmania is easy- take any of the cheap flights to Melbourne and from then fly to Hobart or Launceston. There are direct flights as well but the long hours kinds of takes a toll on you.

Its unbelievable how this island state presents and endless variety within such a compact space! From green rain forested valleys to glistening white beaches, towering sea cliffs, highland lakes and cities all within a 90-minute drive. Show me another place in the world like this and I will do your laundry for two whole weeks!

This was my first visit to Tassie and I was blown away by the combinations of the heritage charm and the cultural diversity in the capital city of Hobart. You drive or join a tour, just 90 minutes away you would be welcomed by the pristine waters of Bruny Island and the mesmerizing history of Port Arthur – so much to learn. It’s a wonder how tranquillity of a city from a era long gone co exists with the vitality of a small sized metropolis.

Dock side cafés, 19th century sandstone warehouses, lofty porches, quaint settler’s cottages, and artist’s studios, fine dining restaurants- The pretty River Derwent and the Mount Wellington rising above it is a picture perfect landscape. Next day my mate Callum took me to a tour through the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the MONA just a few minutes away. In the evening he took me to a classical music concert. He promised to take me to the dock early the next morning – it was an amazing sight – fishing was fun! I’m not much of a fisho myself but it was great to be a part of it all. The fish punts, fishing boats, Constitution Dock, square rigged yachts and more. Later we took a tour of the Salamanca Market – luckily it was a Saturday- the only day it’s held.

If you go past the Coal River Valley Wineries in the historic town of Richmond is an overload of landscapes and pretty sights and wonderful experiences. The gaol serves as a prologue to the Port Arthur Historic Sight on the Tasman Peninsula. If you are looking for thrilling walks – you are in the right place. It will lead you to 300 meter sea cliffs- to feed that adrenalin junkie inside of you.

Bruny Island trip was suggested by Callum’s wife, Audra. It was a great suggestion- the view from beneath the world’s highest sea cliffs is surreal. Oatlands is another wonder on its own. We also further to New Norfolk and spent two nights in Hamilton. The southern edge of the Central Plateau will give you the taste of a high country- Bothwell especially. One good thing about making Hobart your base is that you have a chance to kick back and relax once in a while from the trips to the wider regions for its colors, variety, and visual delight.

flightsaustralia.com.au is what helped me get pretty great deals on the tickets- you can give it a shot too. Overall it was a fantastic weekend break. Would have to go back soon – it was too short a trip and once is not enough.

So, have you seen all the three parts from the movie – Lord of the Rings. How about to travel to the fascinating place from the Movie – Lord of the Rings. Do you have any Idea where the movie Lord of the Rings was filmed?

Well, It was filmed on the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand. It was 20 years ago, and 18 year old Tolkien fan Peter Jackson was travelling from Wellington to Auckland. Middle Earth was there, outside the window of the train. ince then, New Zealand‘s passenger rail service has tragically withered, but Jackson‘s journey has been magically realised.

After three years of planning, the director began his cinematic journey to film Lord of the Rings in October 1999 with around 2500 companions. Those most beautiful places of New Zealand from the movie are here -

1. Arrowtown Recreational Reserve

Arrowtown Recreational Reserve is located in Arrowtown in Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. In the movie this place was filmed as Ford of Bruinen.

The Ford of Bruinen was the crossing of the Bruinen or Loudwater River on the path to Rivendell. Also known as the Ford of Rivendell, its waters were under the power of Elrond.

Arrowtown is located on the banks of the Arrow River approximately 5 km from State Highway 6.

Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand
(Ford of Bruinen) (River Anduin) (Amon Hen)

There is also road access directly to Queenstown via the Shotover Gorge and a third route via the picturesque Lake Hayes.

2. Tarras

Tarras is located in Wanaka of Otago region of New Zealand. It was used same for Ford of Bruinen.

3. Fernside,

Fwernside is located in Featherston of the Wairarapa region.

Fernside is an historic Georgian-style house offering accommodation in its grounds. If you stay here, you can see where scenes of Lothlorien were filmed. The small lake became the Silverlode River which flows near the city of the Elves.

Heathcote Helmore who designed the house in 1924 had worked in Lutyen’s office.

The magnificent grounds are not open to casual visitors but can also be visited with any of three different tour companies, listed on the Fernside website.

4. Paradise, Glenorchy, Otago – for Amon Hen

What to see and what things to do in Tasmania? Tasmania is a pure and rejuvenating destination where you will find the freshest in regional produce and intriguing wildlife including the iconic Tasmanian devil.

Come and enjoy our pristine nature and vast open space, the purity of our air and water, and the friendly welcome from our local people. Here you have a look at the things to do and what to see in Tasmania.

Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park

What’s special about Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park? Cradle Mountain, the start of the 65-kilometre (40-mile) Overland Track, is the northern end of the 161,000-hectare (397,840-acre) Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Tasmania’s highest mountain, 1,617-metre (5,305-foot) Mt Ossa, is in this park, just off the Overland Track, while another beautiful national park, the Walls of Jerusalem, abuts its eastern boundary.

The sheer magnificence of Cradle Mountain inspired Austrian-born Gustav Weindorfer to build a chalet of King Billy pine here in 1912 and work tirelessly for a decade to have the area declared a national park “for the people for all time”. His dream was realised in 1922, and today a quarter of all visitors to the state travel here to share his vision.

Take one of the many short walks through the ever-changing vegetation of the shores and mountainside to gain a full appreciation of the magic of this area.

Hobart

Hobart is Tasmania’s harbour capital, located in the south-east of the state at the foot of majestic Mount Wellington.

What’s special about Hobart?

Australia’s smallest and most historic capital in close proximity to beautiful natural surrounds.

Your start point to explore south east Tasmania.

A provocative mix of historic and contemporary art and culture.

Head down to Salamanca Place where you will find 19th-century waterfront warehouses dating back to the 1830s whaling days. Today, they house cafes, restaurants, galleries and art studios, the ideal place to wander or enjoy alfresco dining.Polished glass winks in the windows of settlers’ cottages in nearby Battery Point, and brass doorknobs gleam in the lofty porches of colonial edifices. Hobart is a city of warm sandstone, bright spinnakers on the water, fish punts at the docks and coffee under the sun umbrellas of Salamanca where the famous Salamanca Market is held every Saturday.

Launceston

Launceston is Tasmania’s second largest city and has redefined itself as a cultural hub with vibrant cafes, museums and open parkland.

What’s special about Launceston?

Gateway to the cool-climate wineries of the Tamar Valley.

It is graced with magnificent Victorian buildings.

This small compact city is easy to explore. You can walk the elegant streetscapes and through century-old parks, which sit beside revitalised areas such as Launceston Seaport, with its waterfront eateries. A boardwalk links the Seaport to Inveresk, where you can visit one of Australia’s best regional galleries, the Queen Victoria Museum at Inveresk.

Launceston is an ideal base for visiting the vineyards of the Tamar Valley. Follow the Tamar Valley Wine Route and sample some of Tasmania’s finest cool-climate wines. You may also enjoy a river cruise, an ideal way to explore the Tamar River and wetland area.

Port Arthur

Port Arthur is a quaint village, which is better known for the well-preserved penal colony buildings at the Port Arthur Historic Site.

What’s special about Port Arthur?

The UNECSO World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site.

Spectacular coastline.

Be sure to spend some time in the village of Port Arthur, often missed because of the significance of the Historic Site. There is so much to experience in the area that you may want to consider staying overnight; particularly as entry passes to the Site are valid for two days.Surfing, sea kayaking and bushwalking are popular and the coastline is spectacular. A short drive south of Port Arthur will take you to Remarkable Cave, a cave-like opening that leads out to sea. From here you can walk to Crescent Bay, a secluded curve of striking beauty backed by huge sand dunes. For a different view, take the plunge and dive amongst rich marine life in waters that offer some of the best temperate diving in Australia and explore the local shipwreck sites.

Just 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) north-west is the (also UNESCO World Heritage listed) Coal Mines Historic Site, where interpretive signs explain the harsh lives and working conditions of repeat offenders from Port Arthur who worked underground extracting coal. Look out for Doo Town, a quirky shack community devoted to homes with a theme: “GunnaDo”, “She’ll Doo”, “Humpty Doo” – and many more.

Strahan

Strahan is the major harbour town on Tasmania’s wild west coast with a unique pioneering heritage.

Cruises on the Gordon River take you deep into the World Heritage Area wilderness. You travel through one of the last pristine examples of temperate rainforest in the world. Make sure your cruise stops off at Sarah Island where you can hear the stories of the convicts who logged the Huon pine for shipbuilding.

Take the steam railway journey of a lifetime from Queenstown to Strahan. The journey takes you through dense rainforest, beside rushing rivers to experience life as the early miners did. However, today, your journey includes fine Tasmanian wine and food.

Wineglass Bay

Let your eyes follow the perfect curve where white sand meets turquoise waters and you will know why Wineglass Bay consistently rates among the top ten beaches in the world.

What’s special about Wineglass Bay?

A 45-minute uphill walk rewards you with breathtaking views at Wineglass Bay lookout – and that amazing photo opportunity which everyone knows.

Enjoy the sheer beauty of The Hazards, pink granite peaks forming the park’s dramatic backdrop.

Join the only cruise into Wineglass Bay and see it as only a privileged few can, aboard a Freycinet Cruises vessel.

Wineglass Bay, along with Cradle Mountain, is recognised across the world as one of Tasmania’s iconic destinations. But, there is more to this east coast gem than simply capturing your perfect-postcard snap from the lookout. Located in Freycinet National Park, the region is so naturally stunning and blissfully pure that it’s easy to feel as if you are an early French explorer first setting foot on Wineglass Bay.

Because of it’s separation from mainland Australia, Tasmania is the home to many of the animals or plants that are rare or even extinct in other areas around the world. If visitors are watchful, they are very likely to witness these species on trails or near streams. Tourists can also be accompanied by a tour guide to point out these animals so you won’t miss them! Some of these rare mammals include the Tasmanian Devil, Platypus, Echidna, Sugar Glider, Eastern Quoll, and Forester Kangaroo.

The Great Tasmanian Bike Ride, - held in early February.

The Overland Track, The iconic bushwalk from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair – bookings essential during the main walking season (November to April).

Scuba Diving in Tasmania – This is another great thing to do in tasmania . Tasmania is home to some of the best temperate diving in the world. Along with its giant kelp forests and numerous shipwrecks, the waters reefs also offer an array of unique marine plants and animals. There are many dive sites situated along the coast, the most popular sites are at Bicheno, Bay of Fires, Flinders Island, Fortescue Bay, Tasman Peninsula and Maria Island.

Off Road Touring. Because Tasmania is a very rugged and heavily forested region, tourists happen to miss out on some incredible places if they do not have a vehicle with four-wheel-drive. Visitors can explore these trails with an experienced operator or either form or tag along with a group. Before exploring, make sure you have a current map of the area. In 2003, Tasmania changed the co-ordinate system used for all maps from AGD 66 to GDA 94. Also, ask local land manager for the latest information on the condition of the area you plan to use and permits.

Kayaking in Tasmania. After landing in Hobart’s Airport, you are a mere 20 minute drive away from beginning your kayaking experience. Visitors can explore Tasmania’s beautiful coastlines and search out secret coves by kayaking. There are professional kayak guides based in Hobart, Kettering, Port Arthur, Coles Bay, Lanceston, and Strahan. Kayak travel through Tasmania’s beautiful landscape offers relaxation and exhilaration that tourists will not want to miss out on.

Trout Fishing. Trout Guides and Lodges Tasmania Incorporated (TGALT) is the industry body, that was voluntarily formed in 1981, initially called the, Tasmanian Professional Trout Fishing Guides Association. Its primary purpose was to provide anglers with a source of guides that they could be assured, would provide a safe, appropriate and professional service. During 1995 the Association was expanded to specifically include trout fishing lodges as full members.

Hang Gliding and the Flying Fox, Hollybank Treetops Adventure takes visitors across treetops and gives them the experience of seeing Tasmania’s forests in a whole new way – bird’s-eye view! These canopy tours last for 3 hours and are led by highly-trained professionals. Not only do guests take part in this unique adventure by soaring across about a kilometer of cable but they also learn about the forests below them.

Visitors love the adventurousness way the Abel Tasman National Park mixes physical exertion with the beach life. Bursts of hiking or kayaking are punctuated by sun bathing, swimming and sedate snorkeling around the characteristic granite outcrops.

Those who do crave home comforts can stay in luxurious lodges, but sleeping under the stars is regarded as the ultimate way to experience the spirit of the Abel Tasman.

Information

Abel Tasman National Park is a national park located in South Island of New Zealand. The park was founded in 1942. With a coverage of only 225.3 square kilometres, is the smallest of New Zealand’s national parks. The park consists of forested, hilly country to the north of the valleys of the Takaka and Riwaka Rivers, and is bounded to the north by the waters of Golden Bayand Tasman Bay. It is named after Abel Tasman, who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand.

The strip of coast that falls within the boundaries of the park is highly distinctive. Granite and marble formations fringe the headlands, which are cloaked in regenerating native forest. Inviting sandy beaches fill the spaces between trees and tide line. Crystal clear streams tumble down mossy valleys to join the ocean.

Activities

The coastal track

Classed as one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’, the Abel Tasman’s Coastal Track takes between 3 and 5 days to complete. It climbs around headlands and through native forest to a series of beautiful beaches. The track is walkable at any time of the year. It is expected to see lots of other walkers and day visitors in summer.

Sea kayaking

A number of kayaking companies run guided tours from Marahau, Kaiteriteri and Golden Bay. If you would rather be independent, you can rent kayaks and stay at campsites, huts or lodges within the park – just same as you would if you were hiking.

Exploring Nature and Wildlife

Native wildlife is an essential part of the scenery. Tui and bellbird song fills the forest, shags (cormorants), gannets and little blue penguins dive for their dinner; fur seals lounge on the rocks around the edge of Tonga Island. At Te Pukatea Bay, a perfect crescent of golden sand, a walking track leads up Pitt Head to an ancient Maori pa (fort) site.

Terracing and food pits are still visible, and it’s easy to see why the location was chosen as a defensive site – the views are huge. For a different view of the park, there are inland tracks that lead up to the dramatic karst landscape of Takaka Hill.

Day trips

Day trips are for those with only a day to see the park, water taxi companies can provide a personalised mix of sightseeing by boat and track walking. Pre-booking is advised. Visitors may enquire at Motueka, Marahau or Kaiteriteri.

Getting Around

There are comfortable private lodges at Awaroa and Torrent Bay. The Department of Conservation provides four ‘Great Walk’ hikers’ huts along the Coastal Track and four standard huts on the inland tracks. These huts have mattresses, water and toilets – some have cooking facilities. Campsites with water, toilets and fireplaces are also available within the park. Bookings are required in peak season.

Various types of accommodation can be found at the settlements of Marahau and Kaiteriteri at the southern end of the park, and Totaranui at the northern end.

Shark Island is located at the mouth of Rose Bay on Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). Over the last 120 years up until 1975, Shark Island was used as an animal quarantine area, public recreation reserve and naval storage depot. Shark Island is said to have resembled a shark and the shallow waters around it presented a constant danger to shipping, especially with the growth of trade in the early 19th century.

Shark Island offers a picnic experience that’s a little bit different! The island received its name because of its shape and not its wildlife. One kilometre off Rose Bay, the 1.5 Hectare island has spectacular views down the harbour to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

The island presents a danger for shipping due to the shallow waters surrounding it.

Shark Island has a gazebo, large grassed area and a wading beach. A ferry service runs four trips a day out of Circular Quay on Saturdays and Sundays. Reservations are essential as the island can only cater for up to 500 people at any one time. The island can also be booked for private functions.

Have you ever got arrested ? or Have you ever spent a night in prison ? or you want to spend a night in Jail ? How about to visit Jail hotel this year? Jail hotels are the places where you pay to stay in Jail like a prisoner. These are world’s some most crazy and funny places to visit. In these hotels you will be treated like real prisoners. These hotels provide an opportunity to feel be a prisoner without any crime. So stay in these hotels while visiting these countries.

Liepaja, Latvia

While entering into this jail hotel you’ll get drunk guards, officers. If you complain for any problem you will be shot dead.Keep in mind you are gonna treated unfriendly, unheated, uncomfortable.

This former brutal KGB jail has no bells and whistles – just everything it had when it was a fully-functioning detention and torture center, barbed wire included.

You will be treated like an actual prisoner throughout, complete with threats and warning gunfire and crying fellow inmates.

Luzern, Switzerland: A prison hotel from the middle of the 19th century until just a decade ago, this jail hotel goes beyond simply renting out former prison cells as overnight rooms. For an extra price, visitors can stay in the former library or the director’s office, both of which have been turned into luxury suites.

Every part of the prison has been put to some new and creative use without compromising the essence of the original layout or the prison contents for that matter – the library is still full of old prison books for you to peruse on your stay !

Boston, Massachusetts: The infamous Charles Street Jail was originally a model prison in the 1800s that fell into disrepair in the mid-1900s.

Prone to riots and subject to physical decay, it was officially condemned to closer decades before it finally shut its doors (as a prison) in the 1990s. Now, however, it has reopened its doors as an amazingly luxurious four-star jail hotel that has former inmates shocked, impressed and perhaps a bit jealous.

Mt. Gambier, Australia : The Mount Gambier Jail experience is anything but luxurious. In fact, this place markets its rooms as budget accommodations for cheapskates and backpackers.

Very little has been done to renovate the rooms here which are heavy, rusted and bolted just like they were when the jail was originally in use – the entire experience is rather Spartan.

Still, the hotel has some local flavor and features some interesting odds and ends and regularly-scheduled events from a monthly jam sessions to a local produce market.
